The Martin boys’ varsity basketball team claimed its second victory of the season overall Friday night with a 50-42 decision at Gobles.

The Lady Clippers’ recent slump , however, continued with a 51-29 defeat. It was their third straight loss after winning five in a row leading up to the holiday break. Martin has been slowed by an injury to leading scorer Gracie Shettler.

The Martin girls trailed 16-5 and 31-10 at the end of te first two periods.

“Last night was a tough game for us, as we were shorthanded and were required to play with masks on,” said coach coach Ben Schipper. “That really took a toll on us when you’re not used to practicing in them like we did last year.

“Gobles played a really good game. They consistently beat us down the court for open runouts and made things tough for us on the defensive end. Credit to them for playing the best I’ve seen them play this year.

“Avery Jager and Maddy Bogdan scored seven points each and Cirsten Coburn added six.

The Martin guys now are 2-5 overall and the girls are 5-4.
