Martin captured its second football victory in as many tries Friday evening by defeating visiting Bridgman 39-12.
Senior QB Gabe Meyers lead the offensive charge for a second straight week, running for 199 yards in 22 attempts with two rushing touchdowns. Meyers also racked up 140 yards in passing and two TDs.
One aerial touchdown was a 42-yarder, a “perfectly thrown ball” to senior TE Mitchell Jager to push the Clippers ahead 13-0 going into halftime.
Senior Brayden Eckman also played a large role in the victory, rushing 14 times for 65 yards with 2 TDs, and one receiving for 75 yards and a TD. Eckman had seven tackles on on defense.
Sophomore JR Hildebrand had nine tackles leading a stingy defense. Sophomore Chris Tuinstra had five tackles and as many assists. Sophomore defensive tackle Tanner Bird added four tackles and forced a fumble.
Coach Brad Blauvelt said, “We got off to another slow start offensively, but our defense shined in the first half; really the whole game. We made a point to get the ball in Brayden’s hands and he made the most of it.
“Gabe Meyers matched his week 1 performance and continues to lead our team from the QB position.
“This week we play Maple Valley who will present some different challenges than we’ve haven’t seen so far. We are looking forward to a good week of practice to get ready for those challenges.”
The Clippers have won 12 of 13 ballgames since switching to eight-man football.
