Martin played a doubleheader at Fifth Third Bank field Friday and came away with a split against Holland Calvary.

The Clippers scored four times in the seventh inning to win the opener 4-3 behind the excellent pitching of Jacob Robinson and Ethan Gorton. Gorton earned his second victory of the season.

Freshman Cayden Curry led off the seventh inning with a double and the Clippers got two runs batted in on a single by Jacobi Yowier and tied the game on a single by Vilas Moorland, The winning run was scored when Peyton Hunt was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Martin held on behind Gorton in the seventh, highlighted by a double play. With the tying run on third and one out, left fielder Payton Hunt caught a fly ball and hit the cutoff man perfectly for a relay at the plate, where freshman catcher Travis Thome tagged the runner out.

“It was a beautifully completed play,” said Clippers’ coach Jon Gambee. “Peyton set up behind the ball, hit the cutoff man perfectly and Jacob Robinson made a perfect relay throw to the plate.”

Holland won the nightcap 16-0 as the Clippers were held to only two hits. Martin was handicapped by being forced to play most of the game with only eight players.

I have a standing rule that any player who throws his bat, helmet, glove or anything in anger will be immediately taken out of the game,” said Gambee. “I removed the offending player and informed the umpire and the other coach we would continue with only eight. We had only 10 players and one player had already been substituted for and to re-enter him would force the substitute to leave the game. That would also have put us at eight.

“It is unfortunate that this happened but I will not excuse inappropriate behavior by any player, regardless of his level of talent.”

Martin is scheduled to play again Monday at Parchment.
