The Wayland High School varsity football team has an excellent chance to improve its overall record to 4-2 at its homecoming game Friday night and Hopkins is a heavy favorite to move to 5-1. But for Martin, “There is no rest for the wicked.”
The Clippers, coming off a big 49-6 triumph over previously unbeaten Brown City last Saturday, will face another unbeaten outfit in NorthPointe Christian, which formerly played 11-man football in the O-K Silver Conference. The Mustangs sport a 5-0 overall record, and like Brown City, their victories have been lopsided.
Martin still has a long-running streak on the gridiron, not losing a regular season contest since switching to eight-man football, something NorthPointe also did not long ago. The Clippers have amassed 265 points in their five victories for a per-game average of a whopping 51.3.
Meanwhile, the long suffering Wildcats will entertain a winless Ottawa Hills squad that has yielded an average of 40 points per game.
Hopkins will play its last home game of the season Friday evening when it welcomes a visit from Calvin Christian. The Squires won their first three, but then lost the last two, both to O-K Silver Conference opponents. The crushing loss to Kelloggsville may be telltale because the Vikings torched the Rockets earlier this season.
All of Hopkins’ three games after Friday will be on the road, two of them crucial battles against Belding and Sparta with the O-K Silver crown on the line.
