Martin football resumes winning ways at Colon

The Martin varsity football team somehow looked a lot like it has in the last five seasons in the eight-man variety.

The Clippers captured a 62-6 victory at Colon, gaining some kind of strange revenge. The host Magi are among the very few to own a verdict over Martin, a 56-12 pasting in the 2019 post-season playoffs.

Both teams have made the playoffs in each of the last five seasons, and Martin, defending state champion, looks like a good bet for six in a row.

Taegan Harris led the offensive output with four rushes for 56 yards. He also added a 49-yard TD pass reception. He also returned the second half opening kickoff 89 yards to score.

Bryce Robinson ran for 42 yards on six carries and a touchdown. Mikey Branch scored on a 56-yard run.  Gavin Meyers was 3-for-6 for 86 yards, including a touchdown pass.

The Clippers rushed for 271 yards on 32 carries.

Abe Dykstra scored on a 32-yard run and led the defensive side with 12 tackles. He also forced a fumble.

Haylen Buell added nine tackles, Taegan Harris and James Jager added five tackles apiece.

Head coach Brad Blauvelt said he was pleased with the team’s performance in week one.

“It was a good team win. We executed on offense and played physical on defense. We need to get in better shape and clean up our mistakes going forward. Overall a great start to the season.”

The Clippers will try to continue their winning ways next Friday at 7 p.m. when they take on Lawrence on the Tigers’ gridiron.
