The Martin girls’ cross-country team captured a respectable fifth place in this season’s first Southwest Athletic Conference jamboree, which included 12 teams at Lake Township Park.

The Clippers scored 129 team points, First place was earned by Bridgman with 72 points.

Sophomore Veyda Conley again paced the Martin girls with a time of 20:51.85, good for fourth place.

She was followed by sophomore Sara Schipper in 25th place, senior Emily King in 26th, only four-hundredths of a second away from Schipper, freshman Allison Rodgers in 31st and freshman DuRay Sage 47th. There was a total of 123 female harriers in the race.

The Clipper guys didn’t fare as well, taking 13th among 15 teams.

Senior captain Alex Morin ran the 5,000-meter course in 19:17.7 for 27th place, sophomore Jason Dettmannwas 63rd, sophomore Hunter Hayes 79th, sophomore Gary Salvador-Garcia 80th and freshman Jeremiah VanHouten 85th.

Martin next will run Friday at the Michigan State University Spartan Invitational.
