The Martin girls’ varsity basketball team won the district championship Friday evening over Zion Christian, 47-18.
The Lady Clippers, who won both district encounters by double figure margins, led 13-2, 29-9 and
42-13 at the end of the first three periods.
Faith Guritz led the offensive attack with 13 points, Jaclyn Hildebrand added nine points and five assists, Bri Warner had seven points and five rebounds, Freddie Elkins six points and Kiaya Warner added five rebounds and six steals
“We played very well together offensively and defensively,” said coach Ben Schipper. “We liked the way we were attacking their zone defense. Our post players were more involved and our guards were using the dribble drive effectively.
“We got great minutes out of bench and our two players we brought up for districts got some valuable experience. We did a pretty good job taking care of the ball turning it over only 13 times and we forced 26 turnovers defensively.”

It was the second consecutive district title for Martin, which also copped the Southwest Athletic Conference Lakeshore Division crown. The Lady Clippers now own an overall season record of 21-1.

Martin will be host to Colon at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the opening round of the regional tournament. The Magi will bring a 12-10 record into the gym.
The other two teams in the regionals, who will play later Tuesday evening, will be Fruitport Christian (18-3) and St. Joseph Michigan Lutheran (21-1).
