Martin girls keep cruising on court with good defense

The Martin girls’ varsity basketball team, ranked No. 7 in this week’s Division 4 Associated Press state-wide poll, cruised to a 63-14 victory Tuesday night at Lawrence.

The Lady Clippers, who have given up as many as 41 points in a game only twice this season, had no trouble in posting their 15th victory in 16 contests overall. They yielded only two points in the entire second half.

They led 22-7, 35-12 and 51-14 at the first three period stops.
Yet again, Martin had terrific balanced scoring. Faith Guritz led the way with 14 points and 10 rebounds,

Natalie Yowler had 11 points and 12 rebounds, Kiaya Warner 10 points, four assists and six steals,
Freddie Elkins eight points and eight rebounds, and Bri Warner eight points, six rebounds, three assists, and six steals.
“I’m so proud of the way we came out after half time and executed our offense and tightened things up defensively,” coach Ben Schipper said. “Giving up only two points in a half is extremely impressive, and it’s the second time we’ve done it this year. It’s also the second time we’ve held an opponent to 14 points.
“Our bench got a lot of quality minutes tonight and put them to good use. It was great to see the defensive energy they played with. Our post players scored 37 points tonight, which I believe is the season high for that personnel group. Our guards did a great job creating for the posts and the post players finished very well around the rim tonight while cleaning up the offense glass very well.”
