Martin girls run out of gas late in loss to Schoolcraft

The Martin High School girls’ varsity basketball team Tuesday night ran into another opponent that plays Division 2 competition and lost 43-38 to Schoolcraft.

Though the Lady Clippers held a slim 26-24 advantage at the end of three periods, they faltered down the stretch.

Coach Ben Schipper said, “Tonight was a game of runs. We held Schoolcraft to three and five points in the first and third quarters, respectively, but gave up 16 and 19 in the second and fourth quarters. It was a great battle by both teams.

“I was proud of the way our girls fought tonight. We’ve been challenging them to be more aggressive and I felt like we had some improvement in that area.”

Makala Goddard provided a lot of Martin’s offensive firepower with 17 points on 3 threes and going 6-6 from the free throw line, all in the second half.

Cirsten Coburn attacked the basket well and finished with 6 points. Marybeth Ritchie came up with eight points despite getting into foul trouble and sitting out much of the game.

“Liz gave us a spark whenever she was on the floor both offensively and defensively. Finally, Lynsey Jager had a gutsy performance on a bum ankle and played good defense.

“Very proud of our effort tonight, just came up a little short.”

The loss dropped Martin’s overall season record to 9-3.
