Martin girls take 9-0 record to Fennville Friday evening

The Martin girls’ varsity basketball team will take a 9-0 overall record into Friday night’s contest at Fennville.

The Lady Clippers Tuesday evening buried Potter’s House 56-14 in what sounded more like a football game rout.

The Martin boys’ team, however, saw its overall season record fall to 2-5 with a 56-37 defeat at the hands of Potter’s House.

Also on Tuesday, Hopkins girls edged Calvin Christian 48-44 in an O-K Silver Conference matchup to improve their season record to 5-3. The boys, however, lost 48-40 and fell to 4-4.

Martin girls played two very different halves of basketball Tuesday night. They led only 8-5 and 16-12 after the first two periods, but then turned on the jets to take the ballgame running away.

Bri Warner led the offensive attack with 16 points, 9 rebounds, 5 steals; Faith Guritz had 12 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals; Jaclyn Hildebrand scored 11 points, 8 assists and 6 steals; Kiaya Warner had 9 points and  Gracie Shettler 8.
“We started the game with no energy and execution,” coach Ben Schipper said. “After half time, we played some of the best basketball I have seen from our team this year, as we outscored them 40-2. I couldn’t be more proud of the way the girls picked themselves up and rallied together after the first half. Our defense was electric the second half and that led to easy looks for our offense. We shared the ball extremely well resulting in 18 assists.
“This was the third straight game we had more assists than turnovers. We had a well balanced scoring attack tonight.”

Both the Vikings girls’ and boys’ teams will play at Kelloggsville in resumption of league play.
