The Martin varsity softball squad took the championship in the Clipper Classic, beating Plainwell 10-6 in the finals Saturday.
Keri Cornstubble was the winning pitcher in the first game, allowing two hits and four runs, striking out three. Marybeth Ritchie appeared in relief for the Clippers, allowing two runs and she had three strikeouts.
Elizabeth Reinke came up with eight putouts for the game, with six of those throwing out girls attempting to steal.
Kyia Bozzo went 2-for-4 as the leadoff hitter and she led the team with four runs batted in. Bozzo also had a grand slam homer to centerfield in the bottom of the second inning to push the Clippers ahead.
Alley Bacon collected three hits in five at bats, with a double in the third inning, home runin the fifth and another double in the sixth.
Ritchie also had two doubles and Elizabeth Reinke one. The team had seven stolen bases in the game.
In game two, Makala Goddard pitched was the winning pitcher. She gave up 10 hits and six runs (zero earned) over seven innings, striking out seven and walking none.
Goddard’s bat helped her cause as she drove in four runs on three hits. Goddard singled in the first, scoring one, doubled in the fourth scoring one, and tripled in the sixth, scoring two.
The Clippers scored five runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Bacon grounded out, scoring one. Ritchie tripled, scoring two, Goddard doubled, scoring one run and Cornstubble singled, scoring one.
