Martin lost a hard-fought 21-8 battle Thursday night at Holton, evening its overall season record at 1-1.
Head coach Mike McGuire explained the loss as “issues with the defense and the inability to execute”
Early in the game, Martin’s Hunter Kershaw picked up a Holton fumble and went about 30 yards for the touchdown. The Clippers also were able to score a two-point conversion to post an 8-0 lead.
But Holton’s Brent McLaughlin answered with a touchdown and a teammate made the conversion. Both teams stayed at 8 points for the entire second and third quarters.
Clipper junior Robert Martin, had a great game defensively. He made a few key tackles and took scoring opportunities away from the Red Devils.
Holton scored in the dawn of the fourth quarter, prompting a response which never came from the beleaguered Clipper offense. Ultimately, the Red Devils assured the 21 to 8 victory by scoring a final touchdown and extra point.
It was a very different ballgame than the season opener a week ago in which Martin put 50 points on the scoreboard.
The Clippers next Friday will carry a 1-1 record and play host to Detroit University Prep Math and Science.
