While longtime Martin football fans may be scrambling to find out if their favorite eight-man football team set for a record for points scored in one game, the Clippers this week must prepare to take on yet another highly regarded opponent.

Martin lit up the scoreboard Friday night in an 80-26 triumph over Fennville, but this Friday night it will face Bridgman, a team that is 8-0 for the season overall and just about as prolific in scoring.

Meanwhile Friday evening, things didn’t go well for either Hopkins or Wayland. The Vikings made a long trip up north and endured a long bus ride back after absorbing a 46-7 defeat at the hands of Kingsford. The winners improved to 6-2 for the campaign and Hopkins fell to 5-3. Wayland did not provide a Seniors’ Night crowd with the same flashes of gridiron prowess as the week before against South Christian and was blanked 35-0 by visiting Grand Rapids Catholic Central.

Interestingly, Grand Rapids Catholic’s only loss this season was to South Christian, which had its hands full in subduing the Wildcats 21-14. Wayland, now 4-4 overall, will close out its regular season next Friday night at Cedar Springs.

Hopkins next Friday will have a showdown against Belding, which is undefeated in the O-K Silver. The Vikings could create a three-team tie for the league crown if victorious.

Martin now has scored a whopping 431 points in eight games, a hefty 54 points per contest. This very well could be the highest scoring outfit in the school’s history, dating back even to the days of the Onion Kings.
