The Martin Varsity softball team opened its season with a doubleheader sweep of Hastings, 12-1 and 13-2.

Junior Makala Goddard took charge from the mound and completed the game with 16 strikeouts. Liz Reinke and Alley Bacon both had two runs batted in for the first game.

Marybeth Ritchie pitched in the nightcap for the Clippers. On offense, she also had three RBIs. Kendra Goddard and Kyia Bozzo both had two RBIs.

“Our bats were on fire last night,” said coach Jazmin Curry. “I was very happy with how we were hitting the ball and how our defense performed. We were able to steal second base a few times and moved girls into scoring position when we needed to.”

Martin is looking forward to playing Gobles Thursday for its conference opener at home.
