The Martin High School eight-man football squad may be peaking at the right time — near the end of the season.
Ever since that dreary 53-16 loss to Gobles on Sept. 15, the Clippers have reeled off six consecutive triumphs, including wins over solid opponents NorthPointe Christian, Maple Valley and Marcellus twice. That second time was Friday night in the opening round of the post-season playoffs.
Martin left little doubt early about where this contest was going, grabbing a 24-6 lead at halftime and then boasting to a 45-18 verdict. The Clippers bested Marcellus only 28-14 during the regular season.
Martin, defending state champion, now is 8-2. It will have to face Gobles again next weekend in the second round.
