The Martin High School varsity football team is just one win away from a perfect regular season, but its task next Friday will be difficult.

The Clippers Friday evening socked it to St. Joseph West Michigan Lutheran 62-0 to move their overall record to 8-0 and clinch the Southwest Michigan Eight-man Football Conference championship.

But next Friday at 5 p.m. they will play a quality outfit at Climax-Scotts (7-1) that has lost only to top-ranked unbeaten powerhouse Colon. They also hope to learn by next weekend who they will play in the post-season playoffs.

In Friday night’s game, Cayden Curry, again, led the charge, running  for 183 yards on 10 carries, he surpassed the 1,000 yards rushing in a season, for the second straight year. He rushed for two touchdowns and caught another one from quarterback Travis Thorne.

Freshman Chris Tuinstra also got in on the action, rushing for 135 yards on four carries. He also returned a fumble recovery for a touchdown and had an interception.

The offense rushed for 424 total yards and is now averaging 41 points per game.

Defensively, Donny Moss lead the charge with eight tackles. Jakob Conley also added an interception. With the shutout, the Clippers are giving up an average of 10 points per game.
