The Martin girls’ basketball team improved its overall season record to 16-1 Wednesday night with a 54-41 non-league victory over Constantine.
The Lady Clippers, ranked seventh in this week’s Associated Press state-wide poll for Division 4, led 14-10 at the end of the first quarter, 31-17 at the half and 45-34 at the end of three periods.
Senior forward Faith Guritz again led the scoring parade that featured three in double figures with 17 points. Jaclyn Hildebrand added 14 points and Gracie Shettler 10. Kiaya Warner added six points, five rebounds and four assists and Bri Warner had 5 points and four assists
“Constantine gave us a good competitive game and I’m proud of the way our girls battled, especially playing on our second consecutive night,” said coach Ben Schipper.”I was very pleased with the way we executed the in game changes we made regarding ball screen defense. Being able to make changes in time outs and execute them so well gives our coaching staff great confidence in our girls.
“Faith had another excellent game. She has really been scoring the ball well over the last few weeks. Jaclyn, as she has been doing all year, played a great defensive game while also being aggressive offensively. Gracie gave us a great spark tonight playing with confidence on offense and Kiaya and Bri gave us solid all-around games.”
Just about the only consolation for Constantine was that it is one of three teams this season to score as many as 41 points against Martin. The game was a makeup of a contest that was postponed earlier this season.
The Lady Clippers will be at home Friday evening for a contest against Fennville.
