Martin’s unbeaten streak stretching back to mid-September 2023 was snapped by unbeaten Gobles Friday night, 20-14.
It was the annual game honoring the Onions Kings, Martin’s nickname of more than 65 years ago until Supt. Albert Deal scrapped it in favor of the Clippers.
Gobles came into this ballgame with eerily similar gaudy statistics, defeating all opponents by wide margins. The Tigers were able to get on the scoreboard with three touchdowns against a determined and unusally stingy Martin defensive unit.
The Clippers, now 6-1 overall, are shooting for their third straight eight-man football state championship at the Superior Dome in Marquette later this fall. Despite the upset loss, they already have qualified for the post-season playoffs.
Wayland 55, Grand Rapids Christian 34
In a very strange offensive shootout, the Wildcats kept their post-season playoff hopes alive Friday night.
The 55 was the most Wayland has scored this season, eclipsing the 49 it came up with in the season opener.
The victory pushed the ‘Cats’ overall season record to 4-3. If they win one, they have a chance, if they win both of their next two encounters, they will be automatic selection. They made the post-season playoffs a year ago with a 6-3 record for the first time since 2013.
