Revenge is sweet, especially in the playoffs.
It happened to the Martin eight-man football team Friday night in a convincing 28-6 victory over Gobles in the second round of the post-season playoffs. It was the Clippers’ seventh straight victory after enduring the lowest point of the season, a 53-16 defeat at Gobles Sept. 15.
Martin put together 16-6 lead by halftime and then cruised the rest of the way, dominated by the Clippers’ defense, which yielded 53 points to the Tigers during the regular season loss, but permitted just one touchdown Friday night.
The defending state champion Martin group now is 9-2 for the campaign and it will continue its quest for back-to-back titles next weekend after claiming a regional championship. The likely opponent will be Brown City, which was upset 26-0 by Kingston in the regional finals.
Martin twice defeated Brown City last year, 49-6 during the regular season and 42-6 in the semifinals. The Green Devils, however went undefeated in 10 contests this season before losing to Kingston. Interestingly, the Devils had lost only twice in their last two campaigns, both to Martin.
The game next weekend will be held at Kingston.
