Martin’s record falls to 2-6 after losing doubleheader

The Martin baseball team’Clipper Logo_6_4s season record slipped to 2-6 Thursday after being swept in a doubleheader against Gobles.

The Clippers lost the first game 7-1 and then the nightcap 14-0. Both games were shortened to five innings because of the cold weather.

The visiting Tigers scored three times in the opening inning, three more in the third and a single run in the fifth. Junior Garrett Dill went the distance on the mound for Martin, giving up the seven runs, only one of which was earned. He walked one and struck out four.

The Clippers managed only three hits, one each by Tanner Curry, Garrett Altman and Clayton Brenner, and Scott Kerley scored the one run.

In the nightcap, Martin had just one hit, a single by Curry, and collectively struck out 13 times. Caleb Hunderman absorbed the pitching loss. He was relieved by Joey Verberkmoes, Tyler Smith, Altman and Hunter Gilson. Verberkmoes and Gilson both worked a scoreless inning.
