The Hopkins boys’ varsity basketball team dared to stick with Godwin Heights, the No. 1 Class B team in the state, for about half a quarter.
The Vikings were down just 11-9 before the visiting Godwin outfit cranked its game up into the stratosphere to stake a 28-10 advantage at the end of the first period. The Wolverines pretty much put things on cruise control afterward, leading 45-22, 62-30 and finally 76-43 at the final buzzer.
The loss dropped Hopkins’ overall season record to 3-14 while Godwin is 16-1.
Jake Sapp scored 15 points for the Vikings and had 10 rebounds and four blocked shots. Hunter Lewellyn chipped in nine points.
Leon Redd netted 20 points for the Wolverines and Lamar Norman added 17.
The Lady Vikings also played Godwin tough in the early going Friday evening, leading 12-11 at the end of the first quarter. But their offense sputtered in the second period with only three points and they trailed 21-15 at the break. The Wolverines pulled away during both periods of the second half and won 46-35.
Hopkins will play O-K Silver Conference rival North Pointe Christian at home Tuesday night. The girls’ team, meanwhile, will play away.
