Wayland High School graduates Carter Nyp and Cory Ainsworth are among the top scorers on this season’s Cornerstone University basketball team, which owns a 20-11 overall record.
Ainsworth, a 6-8 freshman, is third on the team in scoring with a per-game average of 10.8 points. He leads the Golden Eagles in field goal percentage at 63.8%. He is fourth on the team in rebounding with 136 and leads the team in defensive blocked shots with .
Nyp, a 6-9 sophomore, tops the team in total rebounds with 157 and ranks No. 1 in free throw accuracy with 80.6%. He is the fifth leading scorer with 8.2 points per game.
Nyp had a particularly stellar game in the Wolverine-Hoosier Conference tournament semifinals last weekend, scoring a season high 21 points off the bench on 8-12 from the field and 4-5 from three-point land.
Kennedy Helderop, a freshman guard from Hopkins, played only in the first six games for the women’s team, but suffered a season-ending torn ACL injury and will be a red-shirted freshman on next year’s squad. She averaged 7.5 points per game in her brief stint.
