Wayland High School seniPerry finishor Perry Carter closed out his high school cross-country career by finishing 62nd in the state Division 2 championships Saturday at Michigan International Speedway.

Carter, who was clocked at 16:43.9, was joined in the race by junior teammate Jonathan Zuiderveen, who finished 160th with a time of 17:34.1. Both qualified for the state meet by finishing among the top 15 the week previous in the regionals.

There were Jonathan finish243 runners in the race.

Fremont won the boys’ competition with 69 points and Otsego was runner-up with 162. Otsego was the girls’ state champion with 97 points.

Hamilton’s Erika Freyhoff, who raced against Wayland and Hopkins often during the season in invitationals, was the girls’ individual state champion with a time of 18:00.7. Her brother Mark was 10th in the boys’ race.

Senior Morgan Beadlescomb was the boys’ state champion with a time of 15:26.5.
