Martin girls overcame being short-handed and still took out visiting Allegan 48-35 in a non-conference basketball matchup Tuesday evening.

The Lady Clippers raced out to a 15-7 advantage in the first eight minutes and stayed comfortably ahead the rest of the ballgame.

“We put together and awesome performance playing down two girls tonight due to sickness,” said coach Ben Schipper. “Our offensive decision making was spectacular finding open teammates versus Allegan’s 3-2 zone. We consistently made the extra pass to get a great shot rather than just a good shot.

K. VanArter from Allegan came out on fire, nailing four three-point field goals in the first half.

“We knew she was a great shooter and weren’t going to help off her much, but they still got her the ball in shooting spots and she had 15 points in the first half,” Schipper said. “I was proud of our girls for executing our adjustments on her in the second half holding her to three points, all on free throws, no field goals. 

There’s that defense again.

The coach said each of the seven girls contributed positively.

“Macy Thorne and Hailey Snyder came off the bench and made some good plays attacking the basket,” he said. “Avery Jager, Liz Reinke and Cirsten Coburn were very active finding the open spots in the zone. Makala Goddard kept us composed all night and made some really nice passes and Marybeth Ritchie was tough on the boards.

“It was a great team effort!”

Goddard led the scoring with 13 points, Reinke added nine, Coburn seven and Thorne and Ritchie six apiece. Goddard also had seven rebounds and five assists, Reinke 13 boards, Coburn five assists, Ritchie and Avery Jager seven rebounds each.

The Lady Clippers now own an overall record of 13-3 and remain unbeaten in their division in the Southwest Athletic Conference.
