So just how good is the Wayland High School girls’ varsity softball team this spring?

The Lady Wildcats defeated Jenison 13-2 Friday afternoon in a non-league matchup to run their overall season record to 16-2. They are the heavy favorites to regain the O-K Gold Conference title that eluded them two years ago, but how do they stay up against the elite around the state?

Wayland will be among the teams competing Saturday in the Centreville Invitational and then it will set its sights on capturing the league crown with doubleheaders against Kenowa Hills Tuesday, Cedar Springs and Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills.

The Wildcats will be hosts to the district tournament Saturday, June 5, at noon with a contest against Plainwell. The opener at 10 a.m. will be between an impressive Otsego outfit (14-3) that will be pitted against Hopkins (10-6).

The finals will be at 2 p.m. that Saturday afternoon.

Taking the victory Friday on the mound vs. Jenison was Emma Ludema, striking out six in five innings of work. The game was shortened to just five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Leading the Wildcats’ offensive attack was Emma Tornes, who went 3-for-3 with a double. Kennedy Cole had two hits, with a double. Kayla Reed had two doubles. Grace Kincaid, Kami Morse, Emma Ludema and Kaelyn Sikkema each had one hit.
