The Hopkins varsity softball team Wednesday found out the hard way which team is the class of the O-K Silver Conference.
It’s Calvin Christian, which delivered the lady Vikings a twin killing, 11-2 and 10-0, to drop their league record to 9-3. They are 11-8 overall.
The Squires wasted no time in taking control of game one, scoring five times in the first inning and four times in the second. They added two insurance runs in the top of the sixth.
Freshman Dahlia Veldhouse, who has climbed into the lofty position as Hopkins’ No. 1 pitcher at such a young age, suffered the loss on the mound, but only six of the runs she yielded were earned. She did, however, give up three homers in her seven innings of work.
Emily Dimock and Megan Perry both had a double for the Vikings and Dimock and Sierra Smith both drove in a run. Twelve Vikings went down on strikes.
The nightcap was limited to five innings, as Calvin Christian scored its 10th run to force the 10-run mercy rule.
Smith went four and two-thirds innings on the mound and yielded 10 hits, one a homer. She walked three and struck out five.
The Vikings managed only two hits, a double by Rachel Black and a single by Smith.
