Stormy weather wreaks havoc on Friday night football games

Friday afternoon and evening thunderstorms played major roles on Friday night football games for Hopkins, Martin and Wayland.

Hopkins cruised to its fifth straight victory, 42-0 over O-K Silver Conference rival Kelloggsville, but the entire game was not played because of lightning strikes in the second half. Both sides agreed to let the score stand because the Vikings were so far ahead.

Hopkins now will begin a second round of league contests against Kelloggsville, Wyoming Godwin Heights and Kelloggsville, three teams it has defeated by a combined score of 111 to 6 over the last three weeks. NorthPointe Christian, Calvin Christian and Wyoming Lee this fall decided not to compete in football against Silver teams because of struggles with numbers.

So the Vikings can clinch a post-season playoff with a victory at Belding next Friday.

Martin was leading St. Joseph Michigan Catholic 8-0 when the game was suspended. It will pick up where it left off Saturday afternoon. The Clippers are out to register their fifth win without a loss this season.

Wayland was defeated by East Grand Rapids 42-6 to absorb its fifth defeat this season without a win.

Further details were not made available.
