Surging Wildcats upend undefeated Kenowa Hills

Aydin Tolliver rolled a 267 and a 233 and Izzy Botwinski a 214 for the Wildcat bowling team against Kenowa Hills Wednesday.

The surging Wayland High School boys’ bowling team defeated previously unbeaten Kenowa Hills 17-13 Wednesday afternoon at the Rock ‘N Bowl lanes just north of Wayland.

“We have a solid team that works hard and is constantly improving every week,” a beaming coach Sherry Miklusicak. “These boys are winners in every sense of the word!”

The Wildcats took the first and second Baker games, 166 to 151 and 190 to 169.

Kyle VanEss fought hard especially in the ninth and 10th frames to beat his opponent 155-152 in the fist game of match play.

“Kyle is one example of never give up. He stays upbeat no matter what and that is what it takes to be a winner,” Miklusicak said.

But the individual highlight of the day came with the second point, seized by Aydin Tolliver, who rolled a 267.

“This young man works very, very hard to improve his game,” his coach said. “He is a strong bowler and his mindset was dominating. His opponent only rolled a 148 game, which paved the way for the Wildcats to grab total for match one and take 16 out of the 30 possible points.

What was so satisfying for Wayland that it was against the number one team that hadn’t lost a match yet in the O-K Gold Conference.

This allowed Wildcat JV bowlers some varsity experience, but of course we kept Aydin Tolliver in this match, as he was on fire. He finished his first game with 10 strikes in a row and he started this game with five strikes, finishing with a 233.

“For those of you who don’t keep score, that is equivalent to a 300 game and then some!” Miklusicak said. “Another great part of this match was seeing kids bowl in a varsity match for the very first time! They handled it fabulously!”

Zach Straub had several strikes in leadoff position. Malachi Kelly and Raynie Arendsen had some great first ball shots with spares and strikes. Jayse Henkel and Wil Dewing had some fun as well.
