
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety has arrested a man in Tennessee in connection with a fatal hit and run incident March 25 that killed a former Wayland man.
The suspect, Darqareion Damont Mills, 29, was taken into custody Tuesday in Haywood County, Tenn., on outstanding warrants in the death of Mark Allen McBride, 51,who was struck by a vehicle that left the scene March 25 on South Westnedge Avenue in Kalamazoo.
WWMT Channel 3 reported that law enforcement in Tennessee found Mills hiding in the attic space of a home in Haywood County, according to the U.S. Marshals Service in Memphis. Officials said that after he refused to surrender, he fell through the ceiling of that home.
Mark McBride was born on March 7, 1975, in Grand Rapids, to Dennis and Pauline (Hansen) McBride. Raised in Wayland, he was an exceptional student and athlete at Wayland High School, competing in track, soccer and cross country. He was active in many student organizations, including Youth In Government, Science Olympiad and debate.
He spent most of his adult life in service to others with the State of Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, connecting people in need with vital resources and support.
