Cornerstone University has three players with local ties on it basketball roster this winter, two men from Wayland and one woman from Hopkins.
Carter Nyp, a 6-9 sophomore, averaged 7.4 points per game last season and already has scored 17 points in a victory this month, as the Golden Eagles have a 4-2 overall record. Nyp is a 2018 Wayland High School graduate and was an all-state honorable mention performer for now retired coach Mike Hudson. Nyp also was named to the all-freshman team for the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.
Cory Ainsworth, a 2019 WHS graduate, has been playing as a 6-9 freshman for Cornerstone.
Meanwhile, freshman guard Kennedy Helderop, a Hopkins High School graduate, is averaging 7.5 points per game for the Lady Golden Eagles, who have struggled thus far this season with a 1-7 overall record. Helderop during her prep years led the Lady Vikings to an O-K Silver Conference championship.
