Three WHS alums playing collegiate hoops in GR area

Three recent Wayland High School graduates are playing collegiate basketball this winter in the Grand Rapids area.

Carter Nyp, a freshman 6-9 forward, is averaging 7.9 points per game for Cornerstone University. He has played in all 16 of his team’s games, is averaging 43 percent in three point shooting and has picked off an average of 5.0 rebounds per contest.

The Golden Eagles are 12-4 on the campaign thus far.

Sophomores Avery Hudson and Zack Nieuwkoop continue to play at Davenport University. Both were

teammates of Nyp at Wayland two years ago.

Hudson, son of Wayland head varsity coach Mike Hudson, listed as a 5-10 guard, is Davenport’s second leading scorer with an average of 14.9 points per game. He leads the team in assists with 59 and has made 46.7% of his three-point attempts.

Nieukoop, a 6-8 center, has played in seven games and is averaging 1.1 points per game.

The Panthers own an overall record of 8-2.
