Senior ace girls’ bowling co-captain Sydney Urben (left) made the all-tournament team Saturday at the Cedar Springs Invitational, which surprised absolutely no one, but teammate Amber Beggs came up with a solid 256 game to join her on the special unit. The girls finished fourth in the tourney.
The Wayland boys’ squad, meanwhile, showed a lot of improvement over a rough week, taking 11th in the tourney.
For the Lady Wildcats, Urben was 10th with a 166+181=347 and Beggs placed on her first ever tournament team including her highest game she’s ever bowled with 126+256=382.
“Wow. I was so proud of Amber. I told her before her second game that if she rolled a good game she can place in the top ten, and that’s exactly what happened,” so senior co-captain Mariss Bruinsslot.
Wayland averaged a total of 178 between in six Bakers with scores of 156+148+216+190+178+182. Wayland also also set a high of 216 for a Baker game this year and qualified third for the match play round.
The Lady ‘Cats rolled a 136+193 to beat the Cedar Springs Red Hawks. They rolled a a solid 204+177 in the semifinals, but lost to Caledonia.
The boys bounced back from a dismal 124 average individual scores Friday and improved 41 pins per game and averaged 165 in the individual sets.
“We still have to improve and we will, but what a fabulous boost to our spirit” exclaimed coach Sherry Miklusicak. “We were even more successful when we entered our Baker round where we averaged 185 with a high Baker game of 231! What worked was setting some simple goals for the day and we met some and missed some, but I think that was definitely a good strategy to focus on.”
• Jordan Peters tore it up in Baker games with four strikes and three spares in his 10 frames.
• Alex Marble had games of 164 and 172 and had strikes in seven of 12 Baker frames.
• Bryan Franck had a 163 and 162 with four strikes and six spares in the 12 Baker frames he bowled.
• Dylan Roberts “O.D.” had games of 168 and 193. In his Baker frames he had five strikes and two spares.
• Anchor Dillon Smith, “Big D,” came through with games of 200 and 201 – narrowly missing the top ten for the tourney. His Baker frames included seven strikes (a turkey to finish game 3) and four spares.
“We are proud of these boys who are working harder and harder and it sure is a lot more fun to bowl well!” Miklusicak added. “I see even better times ahead ~ keep it up boys!”
Wayland finished 11th out of 18 teams, missing 10th by just three pins.
