Sophomore Olivia Barabas and freshman Ava Makowski Saturday morning earned a date at the MHSAA state cross-country championship meet Nov. 7.
Barabas trekked the five-kilometer course at the Otsego regionals in a personal best time of 19:37.59 to place 11th. Makowski just missed breaking the 20-minute barrier, finishing in 20:01.15.
The top 15 individual harriers and three teams in regionals qualify for the state meet at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn.
Rounding out the scoring for Wayland, which finished seventh in the Division 2 regional meet, were Hannah Smith in 49th, Elliot Antel 52nd and Emma Thayer 58th.
For Hopkins, freshman Helena Kerber was 29thand Neveah Helderop 55th.
Freshman Isaac Dyer led the Wayland boys, finishing in 26th place with a time of 17:36.72, followed by Travis Koon in 29th, Devein Weaver 39th, Casey Jansen 44th and Cainon Fenn 68th.
Otsego was regional champion for boys and Grand Rapids Christian won the girls’ meet.
The season for Hopkins and Wayland has been concluded, except for Barabas and Makowski.
