The Wayland varsity softball team has been exceptionally busy lately, playing 10 games in the last seven days and coach Cheri Ritz’s group will be on the road again Monday for a makeup doubleheader at Grand Rapids Catholic Central.

The workhorse Wildcats don’t seem to mind, as they emerged victorious in all contests over the past week and they have chalked up 21 consecutive wins. The latest two came Saturday in the Centreville Invitational.

Wayland dropped a season-opening contest 4-1 to Jenison, which is ranked No. 6 in Division 1, but since then has not been headed. Despite the resounding success, they are still only given honorable mention in last week’s top 10 poll of the Michigan Softball Coaches Association.

Wayland defeated Constantine, 15-0, in the first game Saturday.  Leading the Wildcat attack was Kami Morse (2-fot-3), with a home run. Kennedy Cole added a homer. Hannah Rairigh,  Rya VanderKooi, Reese Veltman, Kaelynd Sikkema, Emma Tornes  and Liberty Laker added singles. Jada Mohon hit the game winning double.

Emma Ludema and Harmony Laker took the victory on the mound, striking out 7 together in three innings.

The Wildcats defeated host Centreville, 7-4, in the championship round.  Leading the attack was Kami Morse, going 3-for-4, with a single, double and home run.  Kennedy Cole was 2-for-3, Hannah Rairigh had a double. Emma Tornes and Liberty Laker each had a hit.

Emma Ludema took the victory on the mound, with 11 strikeouts.
