Drew Weber

Perhaps fans all over West Michigan are starting to wonder if Hopkins is for real on the basketball court.

The Vikings, under first-year coach Jake Jewitt, captured their fourth straight victory Tuesday night, a 65-60 decision over Grand Rapids West Catholic in their first home game of the 2017-18 campaign.

Hopkins lost by two points to Comstock Park in its season opener, but since then has won four in a row, all by six points or fewer.

The visiting Falcons led most of the game and were up by 10 points at halftime.

Jewitt commented, “The Vikings fought back into the game with their defense and took the lead and kept it after a late technical foul on West Catholic.”

It was a balanced offensive attack, that helped Hopkins. Sophomore Drew Weber scored 17 points, Hunter Lewellyn earned 14, Josh Sapp pitched in 10, and Colin Weber and Nolan Smith added 9 and 8 points, respectively.

The Vikings, 4-1 on the season 0verall, will back in action this Friday at Belding to open up O-K Silver Conference play. The girls will play at 6 p.m. and the boys at 7:30.
