Viking boys even record at 7-7; girls lose by 1 in OT

The Hopkins boy’s varsity basketball team claimed its fourth straight victory and evened its overall season record at 7-7 with a 66-43 victory at Belding Tuesday night.

The Lady Vikings, however, dropped a one-point verdict to Belding on their home court.

The Hopkins boys were led by Curtis Opatic with 20 points, followed by sophomore Hunter Lewellyn’s 13 and sophomore Nolan Smith had eight.

The Viking boys, who now are 5-3 in the O-K Silver Conference, will take on Tri Unity Christian at home Friday in a nonleague contest.

The Lady Vikings had a hard-fought close contest throughout against Belding. They led 14-11 at the end of the first quarter and 26-23 at intermission, but Belding knotted the count at the end of three, 37-all. Both squads scored 13 points in the fourth period, but Belding took the extra session 8-7.

Hopkins was led by Meghan Schulz with 26 points and Mikayla Bulich added 17. Hailee Breimayer led Belding with 27.

The Lady Vikings now are 5-10 overall for the season.
