The Hopkins boys’ and girls’ track teams opened their seasons Tuesday by splitting a double dual meet against O-K Silver Conference rivals Calvin Christian and Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian.
The Lady Vikings breezed past NorthPointe 84-6, but lost 70-55 to Calvin. The boys beat NorthPointe 74-54, but lost to Calvin 94 to 42.
Earning first-place finishes for the day for the Hopkins girls were sophomore Kendall Mohr in the 200-meter dash; junior Alex Jackson in the 100-meter high hurdles; Jackson, Emma Bartz-Peck, Vanessa Barry and Sierra Emaus in the 800-meter relay; junior Grace Brenner in the shot put and in the discus, and freshman Vanessa Barry in the long jump. Jackson just missed a second win in the 300 hurdles by three-tenths of a second.
For the boys, Landen Klinge, Calen Beilby, Tanner Neuman and Trevor Shealy hooked up to win the 800 relay; sophomore Mason Tomes finished way ahead of the pack in the shot put with a toss of 42-6 and was barely edged in the discus and Klinge debuted in the pole vault with an impressive 9-6 performance, but lost the battle for first on number of misses.
