Coach James Kiss’ Hopkins boys’ track team, after winning its first regional championship ever, has qualified for the state team track meet Saturday at Shepherd.
The Viking boys will join nearly a dozen others for the boys’ to vie for Division 3 championship in the Michigan Track Coaches’ Association (MITCA) meet. The Lady Vikings were in that meet for the past three years at Kent City, finishing sixth, fifth and ninth.
The guys scored two more points than West Catholic last Friday night two win regionals.
Individually, Hopkins will be well represented Saturday, May 30, at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 state finals.
Boys state qualifiers:
• Spencer Timm (100m Dash) – Regional Runner-Up
• Anthony Steffens (200m Dash) – Regional Champion
• Jared Coad (800m) – Runner-Up
• Michael Francis (110 Hurdles) – Runner-Up
• Quincy Collings (High Jump) – Champion
• Quincy Collings (Long Jump) – Champion (also set new school record – 21’5″)
• 4×100 Relay (Spencer Timm, Nik Schoonveld, Quincy Collings, Anthony Steffens) – Runner-Up
• 4×200 (Spencer Timm, Wyatt Stegeman, Quincy Collings, Anthony Steffens) – Runner-Up
Girls state qualifiers:
• Julia Forbes (200m Dash) – 3rd, qualified on time
• Julia Forbes (Long Jump) – Champion
• Bailey Ballard (Discus) – 3rd, qualified on distance
• Rachael Weber (1600) – 5th, qualified on time
• Kennedy Miedema (300m Hurdles) – Champion
• 4×200 Relay (Kennedy Miedema, Josie Freybler, Julia Forbes, Nicole Pavlak) – Champions
• 4×400 (same as above) – Runners-Up
• 4×800 (Kennedy Miedema, Josie Freybler, Megan Heft, Rachael Weber) – 3rd, qualified on time.
