Two throwers on the Hopkins girls’ and boys’ varsity track teams fared the best individually Friday at the Division 3 regional track meet at Stevensville Lakeshore.

Grace Brenner tossed the shot put 35 feet, 5 inches to place second and Viking Mason Tomes came up with a personal best 47-0 to be runner-up in his event.

Hopkins girls finished 10th in the team competition with 28 points. The guys came in 11th with 19 points.

Three Viking freshmen astonished the field with impressive outings.

Freshman Landen Klinge turned in his best pole vault of the season at 12-4, good for third. Freshman Helena Kerber finished fourth in the 1600-meter run and freshman Vanessa Barry took fifth in the long jump at 16-00.25.

Both Hopkins track teams performed well at the Comstock Invitational Monday, May 17, both finishing in the runner-up slot behind Centreville.

The boys put together 145.5 points.

Junior Trevor Shealy checked in first in the 200-meter dash and was second in the 100. Freshman Isaac Koperski won the 110-meter high hurdles, sophomore Mason Tomes and teammate Josh Tew too the top two spots in the shot put, with Tomes going 45-0. Freshman Landen Klinge, as expected, was first in the pole vault.

Klinge, Nolan Hugmeyer, Noah Corneille and Shealy checked in second in the 800-meter relay, Adam Ball was third in the 1600, and Michael Barry and Bradley Turner went 4-5 in the open 800.

For the girls, freshman Helena Kerber won the 1600-meter run and was second in the 800 and 3200. Alex Jackson finished first in the 100-meter high hurdles and was second in the 300 hurdles, Grace Brenner won both throws, the shot put and discus, Jaeden Harshberger finished second in the 400 and the 3200 relay with Mary Wells, Harshberger, Kerber and Navaeh Helderop was runner-up.
