Viking girls, WHS boys win Hopkins Track Relays

The Hopkins girls and Wayland boys emerged as winners of the Hopkins Track Invitational Saturday.

The Viking girls scored 165.5 points, more than 40 more than the runners-up I;n the nine-team field, and the Wildcat guys more than doubled the number of points of their nearest competitor with 219.

The ‘Cat, as usual scored heavily in the throws, with junior record holder Adam Huff with the shot with a personal best put of 54-0.25. Noah Opolski of Hopkins was second and sophomore Ashton Kuhlman checked in third. Huff also won the discus with a toss of 165-2. Hopkins’ Joshua Maule and Opolski went 2-3.

Breslin Vandenbos. Austin Graham, Geno Wierckz and Aidan Reeder hooked up to win the 800-meter relay in 1:33.08. The ‘Cats had to settle for second place in the other relays.

But the ‘Cats swept the 100-meter dash. Wierckz won it at 11.66 seconds and Austin Reeder and Huff completed the sweep, finishing second and third, respectively.

Reeder claimed the title in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.29 and teammate Henry Maas finished third. He also took the top spot in the open 400 at 51 seconds flat.

Vandenbos captured first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:02.01.

Hopkins’ Jack Estelle won the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:09.64.

Carter Marquard was perhaps the most pleasant surprise of the event when he cleared 6-2 to win the high jump. But another surprise came in the pole vault for Wayland where Warren Smith took the top spot at 11-0 and Jackson Byers was second. Perennial star vaulter Landen Klinge of Hopkins did not post a height.

Zac Wierenga of Hopkins took second in the long jump.

The Hopkins boys finished third in the team tally, as did the Wayland girls.

On the girls’ side:

Sophomore Riley Homrich of Hopkins won the 100-meter dash at 12.69 seconds and she won the 200 in 26.42 seconds, both personal best performances.

Vikings Kambria Moored and Andrea Brewer went 2-3 in the 100-meter high hurdles. Moored came back later in the meet to win the 300-meter hurdles in 48,64 seconds.

The Hopkins 400-meter relay team took first with a time of 50.63 seconds and featuring Moored, Ellarie Baugh, Sierra Emaus and Homrich. Wayland was second with Kennedy Jasinski, Taylor Wolf, Jersey Beckwith and Laney Wolf.

Vikings Peyton Roxbury, Navaya Ingle, Emaus and Kate Cleypool too the 800-meter relay in 1:52.01. Wayland again was second with Jasinski, Taylor Wolf, Laney Wolf and Elliot Antel.

Hopkins freshman Keilah Bonga won the shot put at 30-10.75 and Wayland’s Mackenzie Kositsky was second. Bonga also was second in the discus.

Jaeden Harshberger, the Lady King’s high jumper, turned in her first-place and personal best performance by clearing 5-3.

Jasinski added to her long roster of wins in the pole vault, winning with leap of 10-0. Laney Wiollf and Megan Stack tied for third with Hopkins Ellarie Baugh and Peyton Roxbury.
