Viking harriers race in unusual ‘Under the Lights’

Viking harrier Abigail Zalis quipped that she would do almost anything for chocolate milk, even run a 5K race at midnight.

The Hopkins girls’ cross-country team finished 11th among 14 teams Friday in the unusual “Under the Lights” meet at the South Christian athletic complex.

The Lady Vikings amassed 291 team points, finishing ahead of Delton, Holland Black River and Holland Calvary Christian. West Ottawa won with 26.

Individual medalist for Hopkins was senior Neveah Helderop, who completed the 5,000-meter course in 21:33.30, good for 36th place. She was followed by Jaeden Harshberger in 44th, Kambria Moored 65th, Abigail Zalis 103rd and Navaya Ingle 141st.

There were 205 runners in the competition.

The Hopkins boys were 13th in the race. Freshman Jack Estelle paced the Vikings with a time of 18:33.2. Kenyon Katje was 74th, Nathan Onderlinde 118th, Adam Halsted 147th and Vijay DeZeeuw 153rd.

There were 206 boys’ harriers in the race.
