Viking throwers dominate Field Days in Grand Rapids

Somebody has to ask the question: Where did Hopkins come up with the throwers?

The Vikings and Lady Vikings served notice Saturday morning at the Cougar Field Days in Grand Rapids when sophomore Mason Tomes copped first places in the shot put and discus, and junior Grace Brenner was second in the shot and first in the discus.

The competition in the boys’ shot wasn’t even close. Tomes tossed it 44 feet and three-quarters of an inch, more than 13 feet ahead of the runner-up. His 102-6 performance was more than seven feet better than second place.

Grenner threw the shot 34-2 to finish second Ja’kaya Lay of Godwin Heights, but came back to edge Lay in the discus with a throw of 86-2.

To top things off for the Lady Vikings, freshman Vanessa Barry leaped 14 feet 5 inches to take first in the long jump.

The Field Days, featuring Hopkins, Grand Rapids Catholic Central and Godwin, included only the field events, but no running competitions.
