Vikings boys, girls have merry romp in track duals

Both the Hopkins boys’ and girls’ track teams cruised to dual meet victories Tuesday over O-K Silver Conference foe Grand Rapids North Pointe Christian.

The Lady Vikings, to the surprise of no one, partied down in a 93-37 triumph and the guys did even better on the scoreboard with a 111-14 thrashing.

About the only surprise in the girls’ meet was the winning performance by North Pointe in the 400- and 1600-meter relasy. The Mustangs also did fairly well in the hurdles and some field events. But coach Molly Klump juggled her lineup, letting some of her best athletes run in different races.

Hopkins took the other two relays, with Gracie DeZeeuw, Madeline Krcatovich, Cassidy Finney and Krcatovich in the 3200, and Anna Washburn, Hannah Crouch and Madeline Krcatovich in the 800.

Meghan Schulz and Laura Velderman continued to do their damage. Schulz was better than ever in winning bot the shot put with a throw of 35-5 1/4 and the discus at 109-15. Velderman tried the 1600 meters and won it in 6:47.05 and she took the 800 in 2:55.48.

Brittney Houseman was a three-time winner, first in the 100, the 200 and the long jump. Jasmine Fisher won the open 400 and the 3200 and Alyssa Rausch the 300-meter hurdles in a sweep, backed by Shannon Henshaw and Grace Beckwith, both of whom turned the same trick in the shot behind Schulz.

Though taking second, Cheyenne Miller leaped 4-8 in the high jump and Schulz went 4-6, as the Lady Vikings continue to get more competitive in that event.

The Viking boys won all events, including all four relays, with Mike McKenzie, Logan Blank, Cyrus Miner and Cole Bergman in the 400; Nick Belka, Jacob Pastoor, Adria Serrato and Brandon DeGroot in the 3200; McKenzie, Blank, Hunter Lewellyn and Carson Timm in the 800, and Dan Rausch, DeGroot, Belka and Timm in the 1600.

Timm won the 100 and 200, Blank the 110 hurdles and long jump, Nathan Roberts the shot and discus, Trey Collins the pole vault,  Lewellyn the high jump, Todd Henley the 1600 and 3200, Rausch the 400 and  800, and Colten Teunissen the 300-meter hurdles.
