Vikings claim 2nd place in Silver with win Monday

Drew Weber

Hopkins came up big in a showdown for second place in the O-K Silver Conference by winning at home Monday, 71-54 over NorthPointe Christian.

The Vikings, now 13-4 overall and 8-2 in the league standings, will have a makeup rematch at NorthPointe Thursday. Wyoming Godwin Heights has clinched at least a share of yet another conference crown.
Hopkins led 25-14, 42-24 and 53-38 at the period stops, taking control early and never letting go.
Junior forward Drew Weber finished with 20 points. Senior guard Hunter Lewellyn finished with 18 points and senior Tyler Zomerlei added 17.
“Our guards handled NorthPointe Christian’s press and their pressure very well,” remarked coach Jake Jewett. “Colin Weber was doubled often and that left open players who finished strong at the basket. Hunter Lewellyn used his athleticism to break traps and finish strong at the rim. We used our size advantage we’ll down low with Drew Weber.
“Defensively, we knew coming in that NorthPointe had very good guards and shooters. We defended the three-point line very well tonight.”
Hopkins has to get back to work for Thursday’s rematch at NorthPointe.
“The challenge will be to come out again with the same level of focus and energy Thursday night at their place. It’s a unique situation playing the same team twice in one week, but I believe my guys are up to the challenge.”
The Vikings will close out the regular season Friday at Belding and will begin tournament play the following Monday at Hudsonville Unity Christian.
