The Hopkins varsity football team claimed its second straight O-K Silver Conference championship Friday night with a convincing 42-10 victory at Belding.
The Vikings, who have outscored opponents 222 to 60 this year, improved their overall season record to 7-0. However, they won’t be playing this Friday night because conference opponent Kelloggsville has dropped football for the rest of the fall.
So they have two weeks to prepare for an interesting battle against Menominee at Petoskey on Friday evening, Oct. 25. The league title and a post-season playoff berth attained, Hopkins’ goal now is to finish the regular season with a record of 8-0.
Highlighting Friday night’s ballgame were Colin Weber with 140 rushing yards on 12 carries, three pass catches for 48 yards and two touchdowns, and Carsen DeLao, two pass interceptions and 10 tackles. Matt Reynolds added 124 yards rushing on 19 carries.
Matt Cleypool took a 33-yard pass from QB Trey Collins and Matt Reynolds tallied the two-point conversion to put the Vikings up 8-0 in the first quarter. Reynolds then scored on a seven-yard run and Weber garnered the PAT, as they led 16-0 at the half.
Collins and Weber hooked up for a 31-yard scoring strike in the third period. Collins then tossed a 14-yarder to Reynolds to widen the gap to 28-3.
Trevor Smith threw a 17-yard TD pass to Weber and Reynolds finished off the offensive parade with a 14-yard run in the fourth quarter. Pipper Davis and Dravyn Rooks both booted extra points.
Collins and Smith combined on 101 yards in passing for four touchdowns. Hopkins ate up 429 yards in total offense.
Belding’s only six points came on a 61-yard return of a kickoff.
