Trevor Smith (shooting free throw) came up big for Hopkins defensively.

The Hopkins boys’ varsity basketball squad won 66-64 at Comstock Park Tuesday night.

Tyler Zomerlei again came up big offensively, scoring a team-high 24 points. Colin Weber chipped in with 14, his brother Drew added 11, and Trevor Smith scored nine.

“Trevor came up came up huge on the defensive end guarding their best player, Chanse Crittendon, Viking coach Jake Jewett said.

The coach said it was an ugly first half, plagued by stagnant offense, “and turnovers hurt us, but we responded after halftime by playing much better in the third quarter. We built a strong lead, but Crittendon started getting into rhythm and received some favorable calls.
“I’m proud of our resilience and sticking together down the stretch. We’ve  emphasized finishing stronger, and we did just enough tonight.  We came up with a big defensive stop, up by two, in the final possession to seal the victory.
Hopkins, now 2-1, will play Thursday night at home against Portage Central.
