The Hopkins varsity football team put to rest its worst football season since 1978 Friday evening with a 32-26 defeat at the hands of visiting Wyoming Godwin Heights.
The loss dropped the Vikings’ overall record to 2-7, a season that ended a consecutive streak of nine post-season playoff appearances. Hopkins in both 1976 and 1978 went 2-7 and was 3-6 in 1990.
Sophomore quarterback Jason Battjes completed three of eight passes for 87 yards and a 15-yard touchdown to halfback Michael Smith. Mason Schaendorf caught one pass for 48 yards.
Smith rushed for 124 yards on 18 carries and scored two touchdowns. Schaendorf, who picked up 59 yards in 11 attempts, scored the remaining six.
Clayton Frank the defensive unit with seven tackles and Devin Smit had six stops. Both came up with one sack and Terry Thomas recovered a fumble.
