After that 0-5 start in December, the Hopkins boys’ varsity basketball team has evened its overall season record at 7-7.
Even better, coach Darrin Smith’s group now is 4-2 in the O-K Silver Conference, trailing only two recognized hoops powerhouses, Wyoming Godwin Heights and NorthPointe Christian.
The Vikings handled Wyoming Lee Friday night, 61-40. They started fast and didn’t let up in the final eight minutes. They led 14-9, 30-22 and really opened things up in the third quarter with a 19-4 run and were up 49-26 at the start of the fourth period.
Ryan Pierce, who has been on an offensive tear since the Christmas break, scored 29 points to lead Hopkins. Pierce scored only 11 in the Vikings’ rout of Allegan Tuesday, but that was because he sat out much of the game with fouls.
Senior forward Tyler Schulz scored eight points, Jake Sytsma had seven and Grant Stevens six.
Eddie Wesley had 12 points and Cahari Rhodes 11 for the Rebels.
