The Hopkins varsity boys basketball squad lost at home Friday evening in overtime to NorthPointe Christian by a final count of 61-51.

Wayland, meanwhile, absorbed its second loss of the season at Kenowa Hills, 76-54. Both teams now are 6-2.

The Vikings’ game was neck-and-neck all the way until the extra session.

“I’m proud of our effort overall and how we continued to fight,” said coach Jake Jewett. “Toward the end of regulation, things looked bleak for us at different times, but we played together and made enough plays to push the game into OT.”

Trent Baugh had an exciting layup and made the free-throw to tie the game. On the ensuing possession, The Vikings came through with a tough defensive stop to push the OT.

But things after that went all for the Mustangs.

“In overtime, they just made the necessary plays and knocked down some tough shots to win the game,” the coach said. “A disappointing result for us, but we’ll come together, continue to fight, and focus on getting better.”

Trent Baugh led Hopkins in scoring with 19 points, Tristen Perry finished with 17 and Zander Hitzler 10.

The Vikings, now 6-3 overall and 1-2 in the O-K Silver Conference, play next on Tuesday at Kelloggsville.
