The Hopkins varsity football team lost a non-conference encounter at home with Charlotte, 21-14 in two overtime sessions.
The Vikings fell behind 14-0 in the first half and got on the board in the third period on a 4-yard run by sophomore back Ryan Haveman. The two-point conversion was successful and they were down by six.
Hopkins tied it up in the fourth quarter on a 2-yard plunge by Haveman but the PAT attempt failed, sending the contest into overtime.
Neither team scored in the first extra session, but QB Dominic Ghiardi tossed a 2-yard TD pass to break the deadlock. Ghiardi scored on a 21-yard run in the first quarter and threw a 2-yard scoring strike in the second.
Cyrus Miner rushed for 11 yards in 18 carries, but Hopkins couldn’t muster anything in its passing game.
Haveman had nine tackled for a Viking defensive unit that held the Orioles scored the entire second half and first overtime.
The Vikings, now 2-4 on the campaign overall, will resume O-K Silver Conference play next Friday at Grandville Calvin Christian.
